The Dole Salad Circle is a brand new Facebook app currently in development. The app creates an exclusive online community for salad lovers to share their love of salad through tips, recipes, photos and more. Leveraging the facebook platform we created this online social experience that feels familiar yet extends beyond the standard F functionality to increase engagement between the brand and it’s consumers. The Slad Circle goes live in Feb 2012, I will be sure to add a link to the app once it launches.

To drive acquisition on Facebook & email we required users to like Dole & sign up for our CRM program to gain access to the exclusive app.

Dole Salad Circle Timeline

Taking cues from Facebook’s new timeline feature, we designed this app to have a similar layout. However, since we have branded content as well as user generated content we allow the user to filter the content they’re viewing dynamically based on content type (recipe, tip, photo, etc) as well as author (dole, user generated or all). As content is added by users, new modules are generated and the page extends indefinitely. Similar to the Facebook timeline or Pinterest.

That’s the Salad Circle. I will post more details of the app when I get some more time.

Art Direction & Design Lead Design a mobile experience for the Dole Salads website as the primary destination for a variety of mobile and in-store touch points. The mobile site focuses on recipe engagement, product nutrition and quality information. As design lead on this project, I followed best practices for mobile design & usability to translate the Dole Salad’s site experience across a wide variety of mobile devices.

Food Day Logo #1

Over the weekend I created a couple logos to enter in Alex Bogusky’s Fearless Revolution Food Day Project. I have tremendous respect for Alex Bogusky and the work he has done with CP+B and I’m fascinated with what he’s doing now with FearLess Revolution. The project implored designers to submit logo design concepts for a brilliant idea, Food Day.

I was drawn to this project because I love the cause… I think national awareness of the effects of the food industry is an incredibly important issue. This  design concept is for a branded social network website creating a community for users to interact with Swatch’s sponsored professional athletes. The site brings together the company’s social networking efforts in a community format with integrated online marketing and advertising campaigns. Watch videos for a wide variety of extreme sports. Site features a follow feature where if fans follow their favorite athletes they get access to community discussions where they can interact with them.

A series of email campaigns designed to support a Swatch Twitter giveaway. I created several color variations of this campaign to coordinate with the different styles of the watches in the line and to target different demographics. The campaign explains how to enter the contest and contains pre-populating Twitter status links that take the user to Twitter.com and automatically fill the tweet window with the message required to enter the competition.

Social Butterfly Logo

I just finished a logo design for a client that I’m totally loving. As an attempt to get back into regular posting on my blog I figured I’d share a little bit about my process for designing logos.

My creative process starts with a sketchbook for really rough ideas… Then once i have some sketches worth developing I open up Illustrator. If I have any really detailed or well developed drawings I’d scan them and use them as a guide, but in this case I didn’t.

With logos I don’t like to spend too much time perfecting every little detail until I figure out what the final few designs are going to be. Instead I like to iterate, create version, after version, and so on… I usually end up with a monster .ai file like this:

After filling about 10 artboards or so I came up with this concept of a butterfly made out of comment icons & and rss feed symbol. I love logos that combine elements in a clever way. I think the best identities out there all do this. So, I was especially psyched with the way this came together.

For me the concepting phase is the most important when it comes to logo design. I started out this project with an idea that it should be a retro 50′s inspired design… and ended up with something completely different! The creative process always unfolds for me as I create. One idea always leads to another, and my best ideas are usually not the first things I come up with.
